BEST FRIENDS

Everett was so sad.

He hung his head and swung his trunk back and forth.   Large tears ran down his cheeks.

He threw back his head and trumpeted a loud cry toward the sky.

Everett thought if he trumpeted loud enough and long enough, maybe Manny could hear him way up on High Mountain.

Everett trumpeted again.

A splash sounded nearby as a big frog jumped out of Large Lake.

"Grrump," he croaked.   "What's all the racket!   I was taking a nap on that lily pad over there and you woke me up!"

"My best friend, Manny, moved to High Mountain.   We were supposed to have a party today.   It is his birthday!"

"Er-rr-rok", said the frog, "why don't you swim across Large Lake and climb High Mountain and find him?"

"I can't get across Large Lake," cried Everett.   "I never learned to swim!"

Frog thought for a moment.

"I can," he said.   "I can swim.   I can hop up High Mountain and find your friend."

"How will you get Manny back across Large Lake?" asked Everett.

"There's a boat on the other side," said Frog.   "I slept in it last night.   There is a rope tied to the boat.   When we get back, you can pull us across."

Frog swam across Large Lake.   He carried the rope back to Everett.

"You hold this until we come back.   When you feel me tug on the rope, pull us across."

Frog swam across Large Lake again.   Everett could see him hopping up High Mountain.
