Chapter Ten

Mrs. Zimmerman propped pillows behind Freddy and had him lay on a daybed in the corner of the kitchen.

She put cold clothes on Freddy's forehead and a bag of ice on the bump on the back of his head.

"He might have a concussion, Margie." said Emmy's mama.

"Ill keep an eye on him, Dora.   If he is still punky tomorrow, I'll call Doc Covert to come out and look at him."

Emmy leaned against her mama.   Her legs wouldn't stop shaking.   Her mama put her arm around her shoulders and hugged her.

"We better get back home, Margie.   This storm has stopped the boys from baling hay I imagine.   They'll be wanting supper."

Mrs. Zimmerman bent over and pulled Emmy's chin up with her hands so she could look into her eyes.

"Are you all right, Honey?"

"Yes Ma'am," Emmy said as she sniffed back tears.   "I was just scared."

"Just see what can happen when you don't listen?" Mrs. Zimmerman said as she looked from Emmy to Freddy.

"It happened so fast too," said Emmy.

Freddy spoke up.   "I know Ma.   From now on I'll mind you.   I won't get into any trouble ever again."

His ma laughed, "Oh, I'm sure you will.   I just hope you don't get hurt worse."

"You gonna tell Pa?"

"Of course.   We'll all discuss it when he comes in for supper.   I'm sure he will figure out some sort of punishment."

"Yes, Ma." said Freddy.   He looked ready to cry all over again.
