Chapter Three

"Mama, that broody hen pecked me again," Emmy said as she sat the pail of eggs on the floor by the sink.

"Oh, Honey, let me see."

Mama took her hand.   "Oh, it's okay.   She didn't even break the skin this time."

Mama raised Emmy's hand to her lips and kissed the spot.   It felt better already.

Mama looked around at the neat kitchen and said, "Well, let's go."

Emmy ran out the back door and over to the garage.   The door was heavy, but she pushed it open a little ways, then stuck her body between it and the side of the garage.   She put her back against the door and pushing with her feet, managed to get it open.

"Come on, Jimmy," she called as she opened the back door of the car.

Jimmy limped over and put his front leg on the back door ledge.   Emmy got behind him, pushed on his bottom and boosted him up onto the back seat.

Mama plunked her sewing machine on the floor of the back seat and slid into the driver's side.   Emmy closed the back door and ran around to the passenger's side and climbed into the car.

"Ready?" asked Mama as she backed the car out of the garage.
