Chapter Seven

"Whaddya wanna do now?" Emmy asked.

"We could climb up into the hay loft."

"Your mama said not to."

"Oh, she just worries.   We'll be okay.   Come on."

Freddy showed Emmy where the ladder to the hay loft was situated.   Emmy climbed to the top of the ladder and jumped off into the sweet smelling loose hay.

"This is great," she said as Freddy joined her.

"My papa bales his hay and it is stacked in our hay loft.   Remember when we climbed on the bales and built forts in it?"

"Yes, I remember.   It was fun."

"This is more funner," said Emmy.   "You can jump right into the hay and it is soft."

"My pa says we can't afford a baler just yet," Freddy said as he jumped up and down and bounded around in circles.

"Watch this, Emmy."

Freddy climbed to the top of the loft.   Way up on top of a huge mound of hay, near the roof of the barn.

"Be careful," Emmy warned him.

"Watch me," Freddy yelled as he jumped off the top into the loose hay and rolled down toward Emmy.   Freddy jumped to his feet and ran for a little ways, then started rolling again.

He rolled and rolled down the hay and right past Emmy, disappearing over the edge of the loft.
