Emmy hear Freddy yell as he fell out of the loft and hit the floor with a thud. Then there was only silence.
Emmy scrambled over to the edge of the loft and peered down through the dust.
Freddy was lying on a small pile of straw and he wasn't moving.
"Freddy? Freddy!" Emmy yelled.
She ran over to the ladder and climbed down. She ran to where Freddy laid.
Freddy was breathing.
It didn't look like his legs or arms were broken.
He looked like he was sleeping.
Emmy ran into the milk house and got the bottle they had used to feed Schnickle Fritz. She filled it under the cold water faucet.
Jimmy and Tootz had come into the barn. Tootz was whining and licking Freddy's face.
Emmy nudged the dog aside with her leg and poured some of the cold water on Freddy's face.
Tootz licked the water off Freddy's eyes.
"Ow-ww," moaned Freddy.
Emmy bent over and pulled on his shoulders until he was sitting up.
"What happened?" asked Freddy as he shook his head.
"You fell out of the hay loft and landed down here. Don't you remember?"
"No. Ow...the back of my head hurts!"
Emmy walked around and stood behind Freddy. She poured some of the water on the back of Freddy's head.
"Hey!" he yelled. "Cut that out! That's cold!"
"I know," said Emmy. "It's supposed to be cold. You've got a bump back here, but it's not bleeding."
Freddy stood up on shaking legs. He reached out his hand and grabbed Emmy's arm, trying to steady himself.
