Emmy sneaked along the edge of the barn. It was only a short walk to the orchard. She figured she could run between the trees and Jimmy wouldn't see her.
Emmy got to the first apple tree and hid behind it. She peeked around the edge of the tree and saw Jimmy limping up the hill to the back barn.
Emmy heard the sheep, that stayed in the basement of the barn, baaing a "hello" to Jimmy.
They weren't afraid of him. They had played with him since they were little lambs and he was a puppy.
Jimmy continued up the hill and off down the back lane, toward the woods.
Jimmy was out of sight so Emmy knew that she could walk up to the back barn without him seeing her.
As she got to the edge of the orchard, there was a mud filled area to cross before she was on the hillside by the barn.
The mud looked pretty gooey.
There was still melted snow water standing on its surface.
"You silly dog," laughed Emmy. "Off on some adventure and leading me astray.
Emmy started walking across the muddy barnyard. The mud came up almost to the tops of her yellow boots. The tops of her yellow boots were almost up to her knees, so the mud was pretty deep.
Emmy took another step and sank into the mud!
The mud oozed over the tops of her yellow boots.
Emmy tried to take another step, but she was stuck fast. The more she wiggled and tired to lift her feet, the deeper she sank.
Emmy looked up and saw Jimmy head into the woods.
"I'd better get out of here and get back home," she said. "The egg man will be coming soon and I have to get the money."
Emmy wiggled and wiggled and sank deeper into the mud. She sank almost up to her waist in the sticky mud.
"How am I going to get out of here!" she cried.
"Papa! Davey! Jimmy!" she shouted.
She whistled for Jimmy and called, "Here Jimmy. Here Boy."
There was not one sound.
No dog barking.
No Papa shouting.
Nothing!
