Chapter Five

Mama drove up the driveway.

She parked the car, took the groceries out of the back seat, closed the car door, and went into the house.

She noticed the egg crate standing by the back door.

"That's funny," she said. "The egg man usually comes before now."

Mama got back into the car and parked it in the garage.

She saw Papa and Davey walking up the drive.

"Hey, Dora.   You ready to fix us some lunch?" asked Papa.

"Yeah, Mama.   We've been working real hard and we are starving," chimed in Davey.

"Charles, have you seen Emmy?" asked Mama.

"Davey and I saw her when she went out to gather the eggs.   We were just going out to the tool shed," said Papa.

"Well, the egg crate is still by the back door.   She was supposed to wait for the egg man and collect our egg money.   Sometimes that girl would forget her head it is weren't attached," said Mama.

Davey looked around the yard.

"I'll bet she and Jimmy went off to the woods," he said.

Papa put two fingers in his mouth and whistled shrilly.   He cupped his hands around his mouth and called out loudly, "Here Jimmy. Here Jimmy."

"Well," said Mama, "I'm going in and start lunch. Maybe by the time it is ready, she will be back.
