Chapter Seventeen

Sometimes on Halloween, Grandma and I would get dressed up in funny costumes and go get our neighbor Lizzie Cole and go to my Grandma's best friend Gertie Frye, who lived in town.

Lizzie was very old and she liked to get dressed up for Halloween too.   One year she wore a pair of men's overalls with a fancy hat and her fox cape over her shoulders and a red, satin mask on her face.   We drove into town to Gertie's and she didn't even know who we were.

After we got some Trick or Treat candy from Gertie and talked for awhile, we drove over to Great Grandma Sophia's sister's, Aunt Kate and Aunt Nora.

They lived in a building that was like two houses hooked together.   They were so much fun!   Aunt Kate had been in a circus when she was younger and she still put on way too much make-up and wore sparkly clothes.   Aunt Nora was a quieter lady, very much the lady, and she had beautiful cut glass dishes and china plates and real silver forks and spoons and knives.   Her dining room table was always set, as if she were expecting dinner guests at any moment.

I am sure these ladies were strange appearing to other people and funny, but I loved them.   Being their only Great Great Niece, they were always happy to see me and gave me whatever I wanted for a treat whenever I stopped in for a visit.   Cake, pie, ice cream, candy, whatever I wanted.

Grandma and Lizzie and Aunt Kate and Aunt Nora sat and talked and laughed and drank cups of tea, while I sat eating a big dish of ice cream.   When we got ready to leave, they filled up my Trick or Treat bag with lots and lots of candy.

When I got back to Grandma's, I had a full Trick or Treat bag just from four stops that Halloween.   YUMMY!!
