Sometimes, when it was very hot, Grandma sat out a tin tub and filled it with water from the well. After a couple of hours sitting in the sun, the water was warm enough for me to get into it and splash around.
One Sunday, it was very warm outside and I was sitting on the grass by the hatchery. I was waiting for the water in the tub to get a little warmer. But I got so hot that I took off all my clothes and just sat there. Grandma was a little upset with me when one of her customers told her about it. She came out of the hatchery and helped me put all my clothes back on and made me go sit in the swing under the tree to cool off. I did not get to play in the tub that day.
Grandma had a big alarm clock in her bedroom. She sat it to ring four hours after we went to bed. She had to get up and go turn the eggs in the incubator.
The clock was called a "Big Ben". It had two big alarm bells on top and it ticked very loudly. Sometimes, it seemed like all I could hear was that ticking. Sometimes, it lulled me to sleep.
When the alarm went off, Grandma eased out of bed quietly so as not to wake me up and pulled a coat over her nightgown and went across the driveway to turn the eggs.
When she got back, she would ease into bed and snuggle up to me. I loved snuggling with Grandma because she was big and fat and warm.
