One of my favorite ways to cool off on a hot summer day, was to jump into the cow's outside drinking trough. This was a very large metal tub about eight feet long and three feet deep. It held water for the cows to drink.
The water came from a long metal pipe that was attached to a very tall windmill. Every time the wind blew, the windmill turned around and around and pulled cold water from the ground, through the pipe and into the cow's trough.
It was muddy around the cow tank because the water flowed over the edges. Many times I had stood with my head lowered while my Daddy lectured me.
"Don't go into the cow tank. Your feet are muddy and you get the water all dirty."
One time, we had a long and heavy rainfall. It rained for days and days and the fields were flooded. There was an old, smaller water tank out by the barn that was tipped over on its side. The cows didn't use it anymore.
I saw that the field by the barn was covered with water. There must have been a foot of water standing all over that field. The old, empty cow tank was floating on its side.
I got a long pole that was leaning against the barn and got the tank turned right-side up. Then I jumped into the tank and pushed against the soggy field with the pole. I could push that tank all over the field.
Daddy must have seen me because that night at the supper table, he said to Momma, "All she needed was a sail and she probably would have sailed off to Timbuktu!"
