The next morning, Karen and her cabin mates got their time schedules for crafts, swimming, horseback riding, and hiking.
During crafts, Susan bumped into Karen and Karen spilled some red paint.
"Be careful! Geez, you're such a klutz!" Susan said as she pushed Karen away with her elbow.
During the swimming test, to see what level they would be placed in, Karen jumped off the raft and when she came to the top of the water, she couldn't swim back to the raft.
She felt herself sinking back into the lake.
Mr. Connor, the lifeguard, jumped in and brought her to the top and pulled her back to the raft.
When Karen climbed up onto the raft, all the girls were laughing and pointing.
"She can't even swim," yelled Alicia. "She's like, way to small to even know how to swim!"
Karen wiped water out of her eyes.
"I do too know how to swim!" she said.
"Yeah, right!" yelled Heather.
Karen had learned how to swim in the neighbor's swimming pool, but the lake was much deeper than the pool.
When she jumped in, it took her so long to get to the top of the water that she panicked and forgot how to swim.
She bet she could swim as well as any of the other girls--if they had been in a swimming pool.
Karen stormed back to her cabin and changed out of her wet swimsuit into her tee shirt and shorts.
She knew horseback riding was next on their schedule and she wanted to get down to the horse stable before the other girls got there.
