Chapter Eleven

One sunny winter morning, Momma said, "Would you like to go sledding today?"

Yah!   I was so excited!   We were going to our neighbor's, Mrs. Bixby.   They had a big hill behind their barn.

I wanted Momma to tow me on my sled behind the car, liked Daddy sometimes did behind the tractor.

Momma said, "It's too far and I will drive faster than the tractor.  When I stop the car, you might slide right under it and get hurt."

So we just loaded my sled into the trunk of the car and off we went.

When we got there, another neighbor, Mrs. Kirby was there with her little girl.   Mrs. Bixby had a little boy and he was ready to go sledding too.   Mrs. Bixby had made popcorn balls and they were warm and sticky and good.

We all trudged across the snowy fields and through the piney woods until we came to the big hill.   We pulled our sleds to the top and slid down the hill.   Over and over we did this and I got tired from pulling my sled up the hill all the time.

I was laying on my tummy on my sled, watching the other kids slide down the hill, and licking snow off my mittens.   I stuck my tongue out and touched the metal steering bar on my sled.   My tongue got frozen to the metal bar and I couldn't get it off.

I made yelling sounds and Momma came running to see what was the matter.

"Oh goodness. What have you done?, she asked.

"I got my hung huck", I said. "Halp!"

Mrs. Bixby and Mrs. Kirby came over to see what the fuss was all about.

Mrs. Bixby said, "I brought some warm cocoa.   Pour a little on her tongue and that should melt it."

Momma opened up the silver metal tube with warm cocoa in it and poured a little on the tip of my tongue.   I pulled back and my tongue came unstuck.

Thank goodness, Mrs. Bixby had made enough warm cocoa so we all could have some, even after using it to get my tongue unstuck.

We all sat on the sleds and enjoyed a nice little cup full of warm coca.   It felt pretty good on my sore little tongue.

That night at the supper table, Daddy said, "Well, it's the end of February.   "Spring will be here soon."

I knew that my days in the snowy fields and piney woods were coming to a close for a time.   I loved the wintertime, but I knew that when it got warmer, I would be able to walk down to my Grandma's more often and I loved to visit my Grandma.
