Chapter Two

Grandma always had a lot of food cooking for us.   Most times my Daddy's Uncle Ray and my Great Grandma Sophia came down for the feast.   My Daddy's Uncle Dave, Aunt Katie and my cousin Mary always came out from the big city for the day.   Lots of times, Grandma invited other people that she knew to come and share Thanksgiving with us, because they didn't have families to spend the day with.

Grandma had a big black cook stove in the kitchen.   This stove was fueled by wood.   There was a flat top with four iron plates that you opened up and put the wood inside to burn.   The wood also fueled the oven.

On top of the stove, Grandma had potatoes cooking and corn and homemade rolls rising.   In the oven was the big turkey and a big pan of stuffing.

When we finally sat down to eat, everyone was as hungry as could be from smelling all the good food smells coming from the kitchen.

We also had molded jell-o salad, cranberry sauce (but I didn't like cranberries) and yellow sweet potatoes (I didn't like them either) and squash (I didn't like that either) and lots of stuff that I did like.

Daddy always said the food blessing and we got busy eating.

When we got all done with what was on the table, Grandma always had four or five different kinds of pies to chose from.   Everyone was too stuffed to eat any more and they said, "We'll have the pie later."

While the older people sat around or took naps, my cousin Mary and I ran outside and played in the snow.   Most every year we had a couple of snowmen done by the time it was dark and time to go home.

Even though the ride home was only a short distance, I fell asleep and my Daddy had to carry me into our house and put me to bed.

Even if I wasn't sleeping, I pretended I was, so Daddy would have to carry me.
