Chapter Twenty-Two

"What in the world is going on," asked Horace with a big yawn.

Charlie flew down to Stuart's shoulder.

"Hey, kid, what's happening to us?"

Stuart stood up and looked out the little window in the back door of the trailer.

"The trailer is moving!" he yelled.   "We are going down the road.   I see a farmer working in his field, but it isn't Mr. Johnson.   Horace, look out that front window and tell me what you see."

Horace craned his long neck forward and peered out of the small window in the front of the trailer.

"There is a truck hooked up to the trailer.   We're going down the road!" he exclaimed.   "Oh my, oh dear, what are we going to do now?"

"Don't get nervous old boy," said Charlie to Horace.   "We have to figure out how to get out of here.   I don't know where this truck is taking us, but I know it's in the opposite direction WE want to go."

Horace started stamping his feet and moving from side to side.

"I don't like this!" he said.

Stuart thought and thought.

Where was the truck taking them?

How could they get out of the trailer when it was moving?

What were they to do?

Charlie was the first to speak.

"The way I see it boys, we can't get out of the trailer while it is moving down the road.   The only thing we can do is sit tight and wait for it to stop.   Then we can take off."

"I think we better head back home," said Stuart.   "I'm tired of traveling.   I miss Billy and my garden.   I just want to go home and rest."

Two big tears slid down Stuart's cheeks.

"Me too," said Horace with a sniff.   "I haven't had a decent meal in days."

"Is that all you think about?" asked Charlie.   "What about me and my trip south?   If I don't get going, I'll be stuck here all winter.   I can't take the cold and the snow anymore.   It makes my legs ache.   I've gotta get going!"

"All right you two!" yelled Stuart.   "Fighting is not going to get us where we want to go!   Now, let's be quiet and think for a minute."

Just then the truck jerked to a stop.

"Quick, Horace, look out the window and tell me what you see," said Stuart.

"Well...it looks like we are at a farm.   There are a lot of cows and horses in pens.   There are a lot of people too.   I don't know why we are stopping here."

"Horace, see if you can nudge that window open with your nose," said Charlie.   "I want to fly out and scout this place out and see where we are."

Horace pushed on the window and it started to slide open a little.

"That's right, Horace," said Stuart.   "Keep trying.   You can do it."
