Mrs. Johnson stood the scarecrow against the back porch railing. She wanted Mr. Johnson to see it when he came up for supper. She and Billy stood back and looked at their creation.
"He sure looks great, Billy. I am so glad you told me to make him a happy face. He looks very happy just standing there."
Billy ran up to the scarecrow. The scarecrow was much taller than Billy.
"Hi, up there," Billy called. "Are you going to scare all the crows out of the garden for us?"
Billy turned to his mother. "Mom, we've gotta give him a name. He needs a name to be a REAL scarecrow."
"Well, I'll leave that up to you. What do you want to name him?"
"I dunno," said Billy. "Maybe...no. Well...let me see."
Billy sat down on the grass in front of the scarecrow.  . He looked up at him and thought and thought.
"I know!", shouted Billy. "I'll name him Stuart!"
"Stuart. Why Stuart?" asked his mother.
"Because, Mom, he looks just like Mr. Anderson who lives in town. Mr. Anderson wears old clothes and always is smiling and sometimes has an old straw hat that he wears. Mr. Anderson's first name is Stuart. Can we name our scarecrow Stuart, Mom, can we?"
Mrs. Johnson laughed. "Well, I guess so. Just so Mr. Anderson doesn't find out we named a scarecrow after him. He might not take it too kindly."
Mrs. Johnson shook her head in laughter and picked up the hammer and nails. "I'll put these back in the tool shed," she said, as she walked away.
"Stuart. Stuart. How do you like your name? Do you like it?" Billy asked the scarecrow.
The scarecrow seemed to look down on Billy and smile.
"Hey, Mom, he likes his name. He really does!"
Mrs. Johnson walked back across the lawn to the porch. As she went up the back steps, she patted the scarecrow on the head.
"Well Stuart, how do you feel? Are you hungry or are you stuffed?"
Billy giggled, "Oh, Mom, of course he's stuffed. He's so stuffed that it's coming outta his arms and legs!"
Mrs. Johnson turned to Billy as she opened the back door. "I'm going in and start supper. Dad will be coming up soon."
"I'll just sit here with Stuart and wait for him," replied Billy.
